WMIP Spring Conference 2012
Date: Saturday 17 March 2012
“Erotic Transference & Countertransference in Psychotherapy & Supervision”
Speaker: Joy Schaverien
The erotic transference is central in psychotherapy; it reveals much about the patient’s way of being in the world. The associated countertransference may be difficult to discuss in supervision. It may engage the therapist-as-person, bringing to the fore sensitive issues of gender, sexuality and the fear of acting out. Thus at times it may challenge the therapist’s self-concept and sense of professional identity. In a time of threats of litigation and awareness of ethical dilemmas, confronting this topic within supervisory practice is essential. It is hoped that participants will bring examples from their own experiences so that a lively exchange of ideas may take place.
Professor Joy Schaverien is a Professional Member of the Society of Analytical Psychology and a Training Therapist and Supervisor for the BAP. Among her many publications she is Editor of Gender, Countertransference and the Erotic Transference (2006) and Author of The Dying Patient in Psychotherapy (2002).
