Narcissism: Theories and Practice
Four Seminars
If in Freud’s time hysteria was the central preoccupation of psychoanalysis, in our day narcissism has taken its place. However, the concept is very broad and means different things to different practitioners. For some, all narcissism is pathological, indeed, at worst deadly; for others, some narcissism is positive, investing us with a sense of agency and encouraging creativity. But for all the writers, narcissism has to do with becoming authentic and this is as much the challenge for us as practitioners as it is for our patients. Neville Symington in Narcissism. A New Theory (1993) writes:
“In any form of psychoanalysis it is extremely important to speak from the heart. Speaking from personal conviction is quite different from simply dishing up interpretations from teachers, or supervisors, or Freud, and the difference becomes evident in the treatment. (p.102)”
These four seminars, then, will explore the development of the concept, and discuss theoretical disagreements about it. The aim is to provide clinicians space to come to their own understanding of narcissism so that in the consulting room they are able to “speak from the heart” when confronted with it.
