Introduction to Jungian Thinking
A Series of Seven Seminars
Friday afternoons, Leicester
Carl Jung (1875 – 1961) was impressed by Freud’s work on understanding the power of unconscious factors in determining how we live. But Jung soon deviated from his mentor’s belief that all mental disturbance is caused by repression of sexual impulses to begin his lifelong exploration of the deeper layers of the psyche. Following the break with Freud, Jung withdrew from public life and engaged in an in-depth self-analysis, charted in the recently published ‘Red Book’. Thereafter he extensively documented his continuing researches into human psychology and left a vast legacy, which post-Jungians have continued developing as a distinctive account of psyche.
This course will present some of the key themes which have continued to be explored and articulated by Jungian practitioners. It will be of particular interest to practising counsellors, psychotherapists and clinical psychologists who want to learn about the Jungian strand of theory and practice, but all with an interest in Jung are welcome. No previous knowledge of Jung’s work will be assumed, but those who wish to refresh their Jung will find the course valuable too. One or two papers (available from WMIP) will be recommended in preparation for each seminar. There will be time for participants to bring their comments, questions and experience.
